Battlefield 3 is in development
Posted by Peter @ 10:32am on 11th June 2009 GMT | 18 Comments

EA have confirmed in a recent presentation that Battlefield 3 is already in the works by EA COO John Pleasants. We already knew this one (kinda) but it’s nice to get a confirmation especially after the semi-disappointing news about 5 Battlefield games being in development and Battlefield 3 not being mentioned anywhere!

Mr. Pleasants had the following to say:

“I’ve had the luxury of looking at Battlefield 3 over at DICE in Sweden and was highly impressed by the way the team is working on that product,” he said. “Of course, that’s not [coming out] in the fiscal year, but that is a product that is looking very good.”

I’m so happy with this news as I have spent hundreds of hours on Battlefield 2, Battlefield 3 is officially the only game that I would splash out on PC upgrades for! It’ll be interesting to see whether this game will be PC only or whether consoles will be allowed to join the party.

A few days ago, Zelda wii was announced to be in production by Miyamoto himself as a press briefing. A piece of Zelda concept art was shown off to the people who attended but no pictures were allowed to be taken. Today that piece of concept art has been released by Nintendo.

First Perfect Dark XBLA screenshots emerge
Posted by Peter @ 11:42am on 6th June 2009 GMT | 0 Comments

As you know, Perfect Dark XBLA was shown at E3 at the Microsoft booth. However, surprisingly while E3 was running no screenshots were released and not a single site showed any shaky-cam footage of the game in action.

All we know about the port is it runs a lot smoother than its Nintendo 64 predecessor and is in full hi-definition. It hasn’t quite had the overhaul the ill-fated Goldeneye XBLA project had but it is looking awesome, the blurriness is a thing of the past as is the lagfest multiplayer games!

Unfortunately the first few screenshots that have been released don’t actually feature any action. I have found fourth screenshot which shows Joanna shooting a guard but it’s not of a reasonable size. One thing is for sure, the company porting this are replacing the original faces, so I wouldn’t hold my breath when it comes to hoping Shigeru Miyamoto still features in the game.

Click through to see the first screenshots – they’re not in mega hi-res, but you get the picture.

E3: Crysis 2 announced
Posted by Peter @ 3:53am on 4th June 2009 GMT | 0 Comments

Crytek have announced that their sequel to the rig-killing Crysis will be coming to the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It comes as a bit of a shock to see it coming to the consoles as well but this time the game will be making use of Crytek’s new CryENGINE 3 engine, which I hear runs very nicely and makes smarter use of the resources available to it.

Unfortunately outside of this nothing is know as Crytek joined a long list of companies that showed off teasers featuring JUST the logo, rivetting stuff!

The Crysis 2 logo, it alone makes you want the game NOW!

E3: Zelda Wii coming next year at the earliest
Posted by Peter @ 3:32am on 4th June 2009 GMT | 7 Comments

Yes, it was pretty disappointing not to hear a thing about the Zelda Wii title that is currently under development in Nintendo’s conference, but fortunately Shigeru Miyamoto was on hand to give us a small bit of hope. During his press-only roundtable event he mentioned that he wanted to show off the new game this E3 but evidently got denied. I guess Wii Fit and Co were too important.

It has been mentioned by various websites that while no footage or screenshots were shown of the game, Shigsy showed off a piece of concept showing new Link and a hooded female character. Since this image is not going to see the light of day until the game is announced properly, please click through to see my artist’s impression of it along with some speculation on the game.

E3: Heavy Rain Trailer
Posted by Andy @ 11:08am on 3rd June 2009 GMT | 0 Comments

A new trailer for the game Heavy Rain has been released today. Heavy Rain is a PS3 exclusive title that plays like an interactive movie. You make decision that effect basically everything that goes on in the world. It is about an ‘Origami Killer’ who i assume you have to find and kill but not much has been announced about the plot as of yet. You take the role of a number of individuals while you try to piece together this mystery. It looks set to be the new GTA in terms of press coverage, seeing as there is confirmed nudity, sex scenes and violence in it.

To see the trailer, head on through.

Sony E3 Conference: Final Fantasy XIV?
Posted by Andy @ 10:24am on 3rd June 2009 GMT | 158 Comments

Yes, in a very surprise announcement, before number 13 has even come out yet, Final Fantasy 14 has been revealed. Like 11, 14 will be a MMO Final Fantasy that will be exclusive to the PS3. They made sure to say that, after the Final Fantasy 13 on 360 moment at last years E3, it looks like Sony have learnt their lesson and have managed to keep 14 a Playstation exclusive. For me, this has got to be the biggest surprise of E3. While i’m not in any way a Final Fantasy fan, i couldn’t believe that they would announce a new game, when 13 isn’t even out until next year anyway! Telling us it will be released in the same year is another major factor in the surprise announcement. Not one, but TWO main Final Fantasy games will be out in 2010. Unless, of course, there are delays.

Nintendo E3 Conference: New Super Mario Bros Wii announced
Posted by Peter @ 4:21am on 3rd June 2009 GMT | 3 Comments

The first game to be shown off during Nintendo’s conference was the Wii sequel to The New Super Mario Bros, which was released for the DS back in 2006. The game retains the 2D game play of the DS original and actually looks very similar, with the exception of a few more polygons being thrown around here and there.

The new feature of this version is the four player co-operative mode, think about Zelda: Four Swords and apply it to an old-skool Mario game. Judging by the footage shown two players will play as the infamous Mario Bros and the other two will play as different coloured Toads. At this stage it is unknown as to whether other characters will be available. Since I’m assuming the objective here is to rescue the Princess I doubt she’ll be available.

As I’m writing this several hours after the initial announcement Shigeru Miyamoto has since had his round-table event. He pointed out during this that the four-player co-operative mode will not be available online as this game is already utilising nearly all of the Wii’s processing power! Big shocker there as for some reason I just can’t see it!

Anyway, New Super Mario Bros Wii will be out before Christmas. Yup, it’s our 2009 Mario game. It’s not quite Mario Galaxy, but it’ll do!

E3: Sega shows off teaser for Aliens Vs Predator
Posted by Peter @ 3:59am on 3rd June 2009 GMT | 0 Comments

Aliens Vs Predator is a game that I’m extremely excited about. So excited that if they just showed this and a plethora of girl games I would’ve marked down E3 as being awesome.

In case you can’t tell, I love the original Aliens Vs Predator games for the PC. I didn’t get much of a chance to play Rebellion’s original as my PC wasn’t up to the job back in the day and when I did eventually get to play it I spent a large amount of time on the Skirmish Mode (I’m hoping it makes a return in the latest incarnation). And then I spent many cold nights online playing Monolith’s follow-up and loved every minute of it whether I was playing as an Alien, Predator or Marine. Each had their own quality, Marine if you wanted standard first person action and to be terrified, Predator if you enjoyed toying with your opponents and Alien if you absolutely have to kill every last person in the room… or enjoyed wall climbing!

While the teaser is short, it’s very sweet too and only shows Predator game play. We get to see through the Predator’s eyes as he stalks his prey - a nervous bunch of Colonial Marines, jumping from tree to tree he decides on the best time to strike, pulls out the wrist blades and goes in for the kill. Some quick footage is shown including a small segment where the Predator had been jumped by an Alien. He makes light work of the Xenomorph as he rips its inner-jaw out. The Predator then stands on a log victorious.

Click through to view the trailer. Take note: The Predator has two wrist blades this time around, what’s with that?
